Save money and energy
Follow these tips and you will be doing the environment a good turn and saving yourself money into the bargain.
1. Reduce draughts under the door by fixing a brush strip along the bottom.
2. Fill gaps in floorboards or skirting boards with newspaper or a sealant.
3. You can achieve a similar (but far cheaper) heat-saving effect to double-glazing on windows by taping a polythene sheet to the frame. And close your curtains towards evening to stop heat escaping.
4. Take 10% off your next bill by setting your thermostat a degree lower. If you go on holiday during the winter, set your thermostat only just high enough to prevent freezing.
5. Water at 60oC is hot enough for a wash or a bath. Heating water beyond this temperature is both unnecessary and wasteful.
6. Don't wash in running hot water - use a plug in the basin or sink.
7. Use daylight where you can, and turn off lights that are not in use.
8. Avoid leaving household devices on standby or on charge unless it is necessary.
9. Try not to stand around gazing into the fridge with the door open! If you can, decide what you want from it before opening the door. Let hot food cool before putting it into the fridge. And remember, regular defrosting increases efficiency.
10. In dishwashers, washing machines and dryers, full loads and low temperature washes are more energy-efficient.
11. Ensure cookers and boilers have adequate ventilation for safe operation. Don't block air vents and grills to try to save heat because this can be very dangerous.
12. Chimneys and flues should be regularly swept and checked for blockages.
